Sabina Hasford, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
As one of Global Mamas elder seamstresses, Sabina adds so much to the Global Mamas team by fusing her wisdom and experience from both her career and her personal life. Her incredible story is a testament to how continual perseverance and a positive outlook can help one succeed no matter the obstacles. When talking to Sabina one cannot help but feel struck by her positive disposition, given the fact that she has endured so much tragedy. As a child, Sabina's mother exposed Sabina to the skills of a seamstress. However, Sabina was more interested in reading and completing her education. After her schooling Sabina worked as the Secretary to the Minister of Health in Accra. However, she had to resign from her position and return to Cape Coast to care for her sick mother, but in order to still provide for her family in Accra she began working under a seamstress and utilizing the skills her mother had once encouraged her to learn. Unfortunately, Sabina's life was further complicated when she was involved in a fatal fast car accident on her way to visit her family in Accra from Cape Coast. Although Sabina was the sole survivor, in the wake of tragedy she continually remains grateful for the life she has. Shortly after the accident, the death of her mother and then the untimely death of her husband left Sabina alone to care for and support her four children. An act of kindness changed Sabina's life forever when one day an American man was intrigued by her colorful patchwork skirts and ordered many to take back with him. Through the course of his stay, a friendship formed, and he was able to fully fund the construction of Sabina's own shop. It's common knowledge that Sabina's kindness has no limits; when she isn't working on orders she finds time to help the local school children with mending their uniforms for free. Both the Global Mamas and the Cape Coast community warmly receive her not only for her kindness, but also for her skill as a seamstress. She firmly believes, "if someone needs help you help him or her as they are your fellow human beings." Sabina's positive attitude, despite her misfortunes, is contagious among fellow Global Mamas.
