Honoring Father Figures Around the World – Meet Global Papa Sylvester
Few people leave an impression as lasting as Mr. Sylvester. Affectionately known as Mr. Sly, he has been a steady and positive force within our community for almost 14 years. With his easy smile, hardworking spirit, and fatherly presence, he continues to inspire everyone who crosses his path.
Mr. Sly, who hails from the Upper West Region of Ghana, is 54 years old, married, and the proud father of three children. He enjoys swimming, driving, and riding, hobbies that reflect his energetic and adventurous nature.
Before joining Global Mamas, he worked as a swimming pool specialist. It was there that he met Renae, Executive Director of Global Mamas, who introduced him to the organization’s mission of empowering women. Motivated by the mission and their incredible work, he started helping with shipments in Accra. When the Fair Trade Zone (FTZ) officially opened, he moved there and took on even more responsibilities, including groundskeeping, cutting calico, running errands, and overseeing security.
Over time, Mr. Sly has naturally become a father figure to many of the Mamas and staff. With his children being close in age to some of the women he works alongside, he easily steps into a role of quiet mentorship. “A lot of people have told me they look up to me,” he shares. “I really appreciate it, but it’s simply because I am hardworking and honest.”
One of the moments Mr. Sly cherishes most is when Renae, before leaving Ghana for the United States, made sure he would continue to have a place at Global Mamas. “It showed me that my boss was happy with my work,” he reflects. “I’ve worked at many places, but I have never felt this appreciated.”
Outside of work, Mr. Sly shares a deep bond with his children. He speaks with them every day, offering guidance, encouragement, and support, and visits them whenever he can. His relationship with them reflects the same values of care and responsibility that he brings to his work. In 2024, Mr. Sly’s outstanding character was formally recognized when he received the Good Character Award at the Global Mamas of the Year ceremony. It was a true testament to the respect and admiration he has earned within the organization.
Mr. Sly is a shining example of what it means to live with integrity, compassion, and dedication. His impact stretches far beyond his job description. He has become a true Global Papa, a role model, and a friend to many. We are proud to celebrate him this Father’s Day.
