BATIKING WORKSHOP
Experience the vibrant art of African batik during this hands-on workshop led by a Global Mamas artisan. Working side by side a skilled batiker, you’ll learn how she uses wax and dye to bring intricate, colorful patterns to life through batik – a craft deeply rooted in Ghanaian tradition.
As you go through each step of the process, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the skill, creativity, and patience that go into making each yard of batik fabric. Best of all, you get to create two yards of your own unique batik fabric during the workshop that you can transform into clothing, accessories, or a home décor item that will always remind you of your time in Ghana.
Explore the fragrant and exotic flavors of West African cuisine in the kitchen of Auntie Esi or Auntie Eli. You will be introduced to an array of new tastes and flavors as you learn how to create authentic Ghanaian dishes.
Using African cooking techniques, during this workshop you will create traditional dishes like fufu, groundnut soup, fried plantain, palava sauce and red red. After learning the recipes, you will enjoy eating the feast you’ve helped to prepare!
Feel the rhythm of Ghana in this exciting workshop at the beach led by Cape Coast’s most talented drumming and dancing troupe. During this interactive session, you will learn Ghanaian songs and dances, as well as the stories and traditions that accompany them such as the ancient art of the “talking drum”, a fascinating form of communication once used to send messages between villages.
Whether you’re dancing, drumming, or just soaking up the energy of the powerful beats and dynamic movements that bring Ghanaian culture to life, this workshop is fun, engaging, and a true cultural highlight of any visit to Ghana!
Discover the beauty, meaning, and elegance of African head wrapping in this culturally immersive workshop with Auntie. For centuries, headwraps have been a symbol of pride, identity, and celebration across Africa, worn by both men and women to express faith, status, and style.
In this session, you will learn the cultural significance behind headwraps and master five different styles. Aunties Asana and Hajiha will guide you through each fold and knot, teaching you how to create headwraps for different occasions, from traditional ceremonies to everyday wear. Upon completion, you will leave with your favorite two-yard piece of African wax print fabric, new styling skills, and a deeper appreciation for this timeless African art.
Join us at the Global Mamas Fair Trade Zone to experience our innovative approach to using a traditional Kente loom to weave water hyacinth, a highly invasive aquatic weed. You will be guided by the Mamas through the process of preparing hyacinth fibers and weaving them with cotton thread while gaining insight into the time, skill, and creativity that go into every sustainable woven creation.
By the end of the session, you can take pride in knowing you had a small part in improving the biodiversity of the Volta River by transforming water hyacinth into a beautiful woven item that you can take home as a meaningful reminder of your time spent with the Mamas at the Fair Trade Zone.
Discover how sustainability and creativity come together at our unique Papermaking Workshop at the Global Mamas Fair Trade Zone. You’ll directly improve biodiversity in the nearby Volta River by joining the Mamas in transforming water hyacinth, a highly invasive aquatic weed, into beautiful, eco-friendly handmade paper you can take home.
You will get a behind-the-scenes look at each step of the process, from breaking down the fibers to forming and pressing sheets of paper. Whether you’re a craft lover, an eco-enthusiast, or simply curious about local innovation, this workshop offers a meaningful and memorable way to explore Ghanaian ingenuity while improving biodiversity and supporting sustainable livelihoods.
